Reason #7: You won’t know until you f**king try
Non Friction
“I got into writing because no one's going to give you a script to direct when you're starting out…”
–Christopher Nolan
Problem: Like most creatives who started in the early 2000s, I dreamed of leaving adland and eventually moving into film. Being in a corporate agency environment also doesn’t leave much room to explore film-making in the precious after hours we sometimes have left.
Solution: Just as a personal challenge, an editor friend and myself reached out to the skateboarders at the beach skatepark and asked if we could follow them over a few days. It was all impromptu, just 6 hours of footage and no story to speak of. I decided to position it as a 90s mock trailer to give it some intrigue and a semblance of a storyline.
It ended up being a valuable lesson in story editing, the value of a proper sound studio to add the right ambience, and knowing that it hurts like hell when you fall off a skateboard in your late 30s.
Enjoy. Written and directed by me. Edited by Monta Neinberga.
