Reason #10: Don’t throw away rejected ideas

Be The Ball

The hardest part of being a creative is the number of ideas that end up at the bottom of a bin.

Problem: The World Cup was coming up and adidas wanted to promote the official game ball in a splashy way to celebrate.

Solution: 2 years previous, I had an idea for the feeling one gets when someone wins a lottery. The fateful numbers being printed on a ball, I imagined the launch of a vertical bungee as the sheer excitement of winning. I never managed to sell it.

I pitched the idea to my ECD – a drawing of a ball suspended by 2 strings. Two months later, we rented out the vertical bungee vendor’s stall, repurposed the launch cage and created a guerilla buzz.

The idea did well. I managed a trip to Cannes. And now I have an obese Yellow Pencil at home as a souvenir paper weight.
